This effect, if reliable, has important implications for how we categorize speech information. The perceptual magnet effect suggests that category centers are the basis for speech representation. This claim is contrary to previous Consonantal categori-cal perception directly occurs during babbling while the vocalic perceptual magnet effect occurs later on during language specific imitation training. However, current results may also be explained by increased auditory resolution rather than prototype‐based, ‘‘magnet’’ effects. It was concluded that whereas the perceptual magnet effect may exist for particular vowel categories, more data are needed to better understand the role of prototypes in speech perception. ‘perceptual magnet eﬀect’ (PME). The present study extends work on the PME to a speech sound category previously unstudied in this paradigm (American English /æ/), and to bilingual speech sound representation and perception.
